Best Engine Coolant & Water in 2023
Distilled Water – Some individuals opt for distilled water as a coolant. If you've ever owned a steam iron, you'll know they recommend using distilled water. This might lead you to believe it's an excellent choice for engine coolant. However, this isn't true. Distilled water is created by boiling water until it becomes vapor and then condensing the steam back into liquid form. This procedure removes salts and minerals and kills bio-contaminants.

Immediately after distillation, water has a neutral pH balance of 7. But it quickly turns acidic. Why? Distilled water is electrochemically unbalanced; it aggressively absorbs substances to restore its electrochemical balance.
Carbon dioxide is the most common material ("food source") found in the environment. Hence, it's a perfect food source. Freshly distilled water absorbs carbon dioxide until it reaches equilibrium with the atmosphere. Once in solution, carbon dioxide reacts with water to produce carbonic acids.
"Ionically hungry" distilled water slowly eats away at metals. It can create pits in thicker surfaces, like cylinder heads, and cause pinhole leaks in thinner surfaces, such as radiator tubes.

Choosing the Right Coolant for Your Power Tech 10 Isuzu
Most coolants available in the market will state on their containers "compatible with all types of coolant" or similar wording. From a practical point of view, using the same coolant for both diesel engines is ideal. What are you currently using in your primary engine? Most coolants you find on the market today say "compatible with all types of coolant". Mixing coolants isn't usually a problem. You can use any "universal" coolant available to you to get back on the road quickly. Later, when convenient, you can perform a flush and refill your generator with the same brand or type you're using in your main engine.
I prefer Fleetguard ES Compleat OAT for both engines. It comes highly recommended on various forums. We always carry a couple of gallons of 50/50 premix to top off the radiators if necessary.
