Stainless Steel Sand Casting
Stainless Steel Sand Casting
Sand casting (sometimes referred to as sand mold casting) is a time-honored technique with thousands of years of history, recognized as an efficient metal casting method for manufacturing parts that can weigh anywhere from a small fraction of a pound to several tons. The versatility and cost-effectiveness of sand casting make it especially appealing for low-volume production due to its minimal tooling costs. Almost any part configuration that can be produced through other metal casting processes can be converted into a pattern for sand casting.
Our team at youzhen is dedicated to providing you with prompt and comprehensive service.
In sand casting, a pattern of the intended component, which includes metal delivery systems (gates and risers), is made from materials such as hardwood, urethane, metal, or foam. Sand mixed with a bonding agent is compacted around this pattern. Upon removal of the pattern, a cavity in the shape of the final part is left within the sand mold. The molten metal is poured into this cavity and solidifies upon cooling. After the metal has set, the sand is removed via a shakeout process, and additional metal components are detached, yielding the final part.
MetalTek employs the air set or no-bake molding process, wherein sand is chemically bonded, forming a robust structure that does not necessitate a heat source to solidify. This process is particularly beneficial for large or complex metal parts.
Incorporating cores into the sand casting process allows for the creation of intricate internal passageways and structures, making sand casting a favored option for pump and valve applications. Due to their rough surface finishes, sand castings typically undergo some machining before usage.
Sand castings can be produced in virtually any ferrous or non-ferrous alloy, although we primarily specialize in stainless steel alloys. If your project requires stainless steel sand castings, please reach out to us today. For non-ferrous alloy sand castings, we’ll assess your requirements to determine if MetalTek is an appropriate partner.
MetalTek is capable of producing sand castings up to 15 feet (4.6 meters) in length and with a ship weight of up to 18,000 pounds (8,165 kg).
