Understanding Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV)
Building Integrated Photovoltaics, also known as BIPV, combine dual functionalities. Not only do they generate electricity via the piezoelectric effect, but they also protect and aesthetically enhance structures.
BIPVs serve multiple purposes such as offering shade, blocking direct sunlight, and adding a contemporary appeal to buildings, all while harnessing solar energy to produce electricity.
Primary Applications of BIPVs
BIPVs are seamlessly integrated into buildings by replacing conventional materials with multifunctional alternatives. From substituting regular glass windows with solar windows to using solar roofs in parking sheds and solar shades for transparent covers, BIPVs give structures a modern and practical upgrade.
Different Types of Building Integrated Photovoltaics
Solar panels consist of silicon-based photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity. These cells can be adjusted to form various BIPV types, which generally include:
- Solar Facades: These facades help minimize noise and air pollution while giving buildings a distinctive visual identity and producing green energy.
- Solar Windows: Ideal for both residential and commercial properties, these windows are equipped with integrated solar modules but look like conventional windows.
- Solar Roofs: Influenced by innovators like Tesla Energy in the USA, solar roofs replace traditional asphalt tiles with solar tiles, each acting as a mini electricity generator.
- PV Sunshades: These are best exemplified in pv solar parking sheds, offering protection from direct sunlight while generating solar power.
BIPV Operational Mechanisms
BIPVs consist of interconnected opaque or transparent solar cells arranged in series. These cells are situated in sun-exposed areas of the building, optimizing energy production.

Innovative Facade BIPV Modules Using Stone Veneers
Researchers at Germany’s Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH) have pioneered two methods to integrate stone veneers into conventional solar modules for BIPV projects in stone facades.
“Our method allows for the seamless integration of PV modules with an authentic rough stone surface, even observable at close range or by touch. This technique can utilize original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standard modules, making the cost comparable to glass printing,” said ISFH scientist, Arnaud Morlier, to PV magazine. “The panels can quickly be prepared for mass production as the stone veneers are readily available. Any crystalline silicon or thin-film module can be adapted for this process,” he added.
One technique involves replacing the front glass pane with a stone veneer sheet, while the other method laminates the natural stone veneer directly onto the glass pane. These veneers are composed of thin resin-based materials reinforced with glass fibers and a stone layer up to 0.5 mm thick.
The German team successfully created four large modules measuring 1,220×610 mm and weighing 13 kg each. These panels use bifacial heterojunction solar cells sized 156×156 mm, encapsulated between polyolefin film sheets.
Initial tests yielded photovoltaic efficiencies of up to 11.2% with single-cell laminates. Larger test modules were then produced, showing that stone veneers can be integrated either during module production or afterward. However, the modules with the veneer achieved a maximum efficiency of around 8.5%, which is about half the efficiency of unmodified modules, largely due to the resin layer absorbing light.
Despite this reduction, the textured panels offer a “natural feeling and natural surface texture,” making them suitable for partial shading walls or semi-transparent roof elements. Improved resin formulations could enhance light transmission and reduce absorption.
