Throughout our leaf blower testing, we found that backpack leaf blowers tend to be more powerful with longer battery life (up to 2 hours) and are best for cleaning up leaves and debris in larger yards. A handheld battery-powered leaf blower is perfect for smaller yards or tasks like clearing dry leaves. However, you can still find a powerful handheld option with variable speed and a good runtime (30 to 60 minutes) if you don't mind carrying it.

Cordless leaf blowers come in gas and battery-powered options. "Although [battery-powered] cordless leaf blowers are less powerful than corded or gas-powered models, there is virtually no maintenance to perform other than charging the batteries," says Deane Biermeier, a member of The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board.

After testing in our lab and for six months in one of our yards, the Ryobi ONE+ Cordless Leaf Blower continues to stand out as a lightweight and powerful tool. We think it's perfect for most fall cleanup projects and for clearing unwanted debris around decks, patios, gardens, and other outdoor spaces. We found it to be easy to assemble (just two pieces to snap together) and liked the variable speed settings, so we could have just the right amount of power we needed, whether it was removing debris from a somewhat fragile garden bed or blowing away a wet leaf pile.

We also liked that this model's battery can be used with other Ryobi products that are part of the 8-Volt ONE+ system. By having more than one tool in the same system, you can swap out a low battery with a full one without having to wait several hours for one to charge.

This model has an airflow capacity of up to 280 CFM and an airflow speed of up to 100 miles per hour. We found that the battery lasted about 30 minutes, using variable speeds, although the manufacturer lists it as lasting for 10 minutes on the highest power.

We also had varying reports on this leaf blower's noise level. In the lab, we thought it was too loud (we reported it at 107 dB), but at home, we didn't find the noise to be overbearing for the longer time periods that we used it. Note that the noise level of a normal conversation is around 60 dB, and the manufacturer lists this one as 65 dB.

How It Performed Long-Term

We tested this leaf blower several times a week for six months in one of our own yards (weather permitting), and found that it continued to impress us with its power, maneuverability, and battery life. It helped us keep our lawn and garden looking great, especially when removing leaves in the fall. We also used it to clear spider webs and other types of unwanted debris.

While we initially noted that the chute seemed too long, we found that it helped direct the flow and wasn't hard to store, so it wasn't a nuisance at all. Overall, this leaf blower continues to be our favorite cordless option that we tested.

While testing the EGO POWER+ 600 CFM Backpack Blower, we found it to be light and comfortable to use, and it didn't hinder our mobility as we were working in our yard. Since it is a backpack model, most of its weight is distributed on your back as you use it. This means two things: First, your arms and wrists are spared from bearing the entire load and consequently may not grow fatigued as quickly. Second, you shouldn't be super alarmed by its 12.5-pound weight, a little over 3 pounds more than our best overall. We also liked the convenience of the adjustable chute.

The unit has an airflow speed of up to 145 mph and lets you choose between an airflow capacity of 260 CFM and 600 CFM. This range allows for plenty of flexibility in how you use your leaf blower and means you should be able to reach leaves across a significant distance. For example, in our lab, we cleared the patch of grass from the dry leaves in 17 seconds and the damp leaves in just over 15 seconds. This unit really showed off on the patch of concrete, where it cleared the pile of leaves in just 7 seconds and easily moved the various fishing weights without requiring us to be super close to them.

Overall, we found it not too loud while operating and all in all, fun and easy to use. However, if you have a smaller yard, the power range may be excessive, and you may find it more conducive to opt for a less powerful model at a lower price.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using it for six months in a yard filled with 20 trees, there isn't much we dislike about this leaf blower. It helped make fall cleanup feel like less of a chore. We also found that it came in handy for clearing sticks, leaves, and even light snow from our driveway and sidewalk.

Our favorite feature was having two options for operation. While we could push a button the whole time we were operating the blower, we could opt just to set the dial and go, which was less tiring on our hands. We did find ourselves grabbing our small handheld model for smaller or more detailed tasks occasionally, but overall, we think this is the best option for tackling larger fall cleanup projects or for those with larger outdoor spaces.
