REDISPERSIBLE POLYMER POWDERS
DESCRIPTION
Redispersible polymer powder
Synonyms : RPP, polymer powder, polymer additive, RDP
Redispersible polymer powder (RPP) is a polymer capable, when mixed with water, to redisperse, again form aqueous polymer dispersions, which, as a result of curing, form a continuous polymer film, contributing to high water-holding capacity, adhesion and workability of dry building mixtures.
Production method
The redispersible powder is obtained by spray drying a latex emulsion. To prevent the latex particles from sticking together during production and when diluted with water, polyvinyl alcohol is used. RPP (dry latexes) are usually produced on the basis of: polyvinyl acetate, copolymers of vinyl acetate with ethylene, copolymers of vinyl acetate with vinyl versatate, as well as acrylic polymers.
Properties
After mixing the dry mixture with water, the powder goes into dispersion and after drying forms a film. The film increases adhesion and elasticity, however, the more adhesion, the less elasticity and vice versa. Accordingly, powders are divided into rigid ones with high adhesion, highly elastic with low adhesion, and medium elastic with normal adhesion. In some powders, water repellents are added, imparting hydrophobic properties to the system.
Application area
Redispersible polymer powders are used in the manufacture of products such as:
- Tile adhesives;
- Plasters;
- Putties;
- Repair compositions;
- Waterproofing;
- Self-leveling floors, etc.

hat is Redispersible polymer powder?
Redispersible polymer powder is a polymer powder with redispersibility that is modified by adding other substances to a synthetic resin emulsion and spray-dried, and can be formed when water is used as a dispersion medium. Redispersible polymer powders are usually white powders, but a few are available in other colors.
Redispersible polymer powders include: polymer resins, additives, protective colloids, anti-caking agents
It is polymer emulsions which have been converted by a series of process such as high temperatures and pressures, spray drying and surface treatment to powdered thermoplastic resin materials. When mixed with water, these powdered organic binders can redisperse in water back into new emulsions with essentially identical properties to the original copolymer emulsions.

The addition of redispersible polymer powders into mortar can increase the cohesiveness, cohesion and flexibility of mortar. First, it can improve the water retention of mortar and form a film to reduce evaporation of water. Second, it can improve the bond strength of mortar.
The role of redispersible polymer powder in freshly mixed mortar :
The function of redispersible polymer powder in fresh mortar is to improve construction performance, enhance flowability, increase thixotropy and anti sagging, improve cohesion, extend opening time, and strengthen water retention.
The role of redispersible polymer powder in hardened mortar :
The function of redispersible polymer powder in hardened mortar is to improve the tensile strength of mortar (as an additional adhesive in the cement system), enhance flexural strength, reduce elastic modulus, improve deformability, enhance wear resistance, improve cohesive strength, reduce carbonization depth, decrease material water absorption, and make the material hydrophobic (by adding hydrophobic polymer powder)
The applications of Redispersible polymer powder are as follows:
In the field of construction:
External wall insulation system: It can improve the bonding strength, flexibility, and water resistance of the insulation system, effectively preventing the insulation layer from cracking and falling off.
Tile adhesive:
enhances the adhesion between tiles and the substrate, preventing tile hollowing and peeling.
Plastering mortar:
Improve the flexibility and crack resistance of mortar, and enhance the durability of walls.
Self leveling flooring material:
