How To Use LPG Hoses
Identifying and Properly Using Cylinder Regulators and Hoses
In this section, we cover the identification and correct use of cylinder regulators and hoses. Regulators help reduce the gas pressure in a cylinder to a lower, more appropriate pressure for the appliance, maintaining a consistent pressure level. For other hose types, please refer to our Guidelines on using LPG hoses.

Pressure and Gas Type
LPG comprises two primary gases: Butane and Propane. Although they are similar, the standard supply pressure varies to cater to the different characteristics of the gases. Domestic appliances like cookers can generally use either gas. The standard supply pressure for Butane is 28 mbar (11" water gauge), and for Propane, it's 37 mbar (14" water gauge). Regulators supplying these pressures are termed "low pressure regulators". Appliances often have a badge indicating the required gas and pressure. Some appliances operate at higher pressures and use "high pressure regulators," marked accordingly.
DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE REGULATORS ON LOW PRESSURE APPLIANCES: THIS CAN LEAD TO A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND YOU MAY DAMAGE THE APPLIANCE.
Cylinders and Hoses
Regulators are designed to fit specific cylinder valves, and one type of valve will not accommodate other regulators. For instance, Propane cylinders use a screw-thread valve suitable only for Propane regulators.
Flogas supplies Butane under the brands Flogas and Ergas. Flogas Butane cylinders are yellow and use a "Jumbo" valve. Ergas Butane cylinders come in two types: orange cylinders with a "Jumbo" valve, and blue/green cylinders with a "Compact" valve.
High-pressure regulators have narrower nozzles and use narrower hoses compared to low-pressure regulators.
DO NOT TRY TO FORCE A HIGH-PRESSURE HOSE ONTO A LOW-PRESSURE NOZZLE: YOU WILL SNAP THE BRAIDING INSIDE THE HOSE AND IT MAY CRACK AND LEAK, CREATING A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. Always match the hose size to the nozzle size and use hoses designed and approved for LPG.
Regulators and Their Identification
Butane Jumbo Low Pressure Regulator
This standard regulator is for Flogas and Ergas Jumbo Butane cylinders designed to fit Jumbo Butane valves. It regulates pressure to 28 mbar, suitable for most Butane appliances.
Stock code 420
Butane Jumbo High Pressure Adjustable Regulator
This high-pressure adjustable regulator is used with specific appliances like hand torches, cow dehorning units, and "crow bangers". The outlet pressure is adjustable, but the minimum setting remains high, around 500 mbar.
Stock code 1341
DO NOT USE ON LOW PRESSURE APPLIANCES.
Butane Compact Low Pressure Regulator
This is the standard regulator for Ergas Compact Butane cylinders, fitting Compact Butane valves, and regulating the pressure to 28 mbar.
Stock code 421
Propane Low Pressure Regulator
This regulator is for use on Propane cylinders, ensuring a standard pressure of 37 mbar for most Propane appliances.
Stock code 1321
Propane High Pressure Adjustable Regulator
This is intended for Propane cylinders and is used with specific equipment, such as hand torches and cow dehorning units. The outlet pressure is adjustable but starts at a high level.
Stock code 1344
DO NOT USE ON LOW PRESSURE APPLIANCES.
Hoses and Hose Clips
Flogas employs two types of cylinder regulator hose: the smaller-diameter high-pressure hose (left in the picture) for high-pressure regulators, and a larger diameter for low-pressure regulators. Always ensure the hose size matches the nozzle size. Use high-pressure hoses with high-pressure regulators. Do not use a high-pressure hose with a low-pressure regulator.
Stock codes: low pressure hose 1370, low pressure hose clips 1376, high pressure hose 1373, high pressure hose clips 1375.
NEVER USE A HIGH-PRESSURE HOSE WITH A LOW-PRESSURE REGULATOR OR VICE VERSA. ALWAYS CHECK THE NOZZLE SIZE.
