Nitrogen Purity
Nitrogen is essential across various industries for different applications. While some grade names are widely recognized, the actual purity standards can differ significantly from one industry to another and even within the same industry. This lack of standardization allows nitrogen manufacturers to choose grade names as they see fit. As a result, two nitrogen products may share the same purity specifications yet be labeled with different grade names. Similarly, products categorized under the same grade could exhibit diverse purity levels. It’s crucial to select a nitrogen product based on its detailed purity specifications rather than relying solely on its grade name.
High-Purity Grades
High-purity nitrogen grades consist of more than 99.998% nitrogen. Common designations include Research Purity and Ultra High Purity. All these high-purity grades can also qualify as Zero grade nitrogen, as they contain less than 0.5 parts per million of total hydrocarbons, meeting the stringent requirements for Zero grade nitrogen. Furthermore, these high-purity grades do not contain oxygen levels exceeding 0.5 parts per million, carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide over one part per million, or water content above three parts per million.

Other Nitrogen Grades
Low-purity grades of nitrogen typically contain 90% to 99.998% nitrogen. Common low-purity nomenclatures include High Purity, Zero, Prepurified, Oxygen Free, Extra Dry, and Industrial. The contaminant levels in these grades can vary widely. For instance, Oxygen Free grades ensure less than 0.5 parts per million of oxygen. Additionally, high-pressure nitrogen grades are available, usually pressurized to certain pounds per square inch with a purity of 99.998%.
Nitrogen Uses
In the pharmaceutical sector, high-purity nitrogen serves as a shielding gas for medications, effectively protecting them from reactive elements like oxygen and moisture. This non-reactive gas is particularly effective when its impurity levels are low. Oxygen Free nitrogen is frequently employed for coating objects to reduce flammability, as combustion processes necessitate the presence of oxygen, which can lead to hazardous situations such as fires or explosions. Low-purity nitrogen finds applications in tire inflation and various industrial processes, including heat treatment in furnaces.
