What Is FRP And When Is It Used?

FRP grating is a type of industrial floor widely used in various industries. Usually it is found in sidewalks and elevated platforms.

The FRP grating is very durable, non-corrosive, and doesn’t conduct electricity, which usually makes it a safer alternative to other flooring materials used in harsh and high-risk environments.

How is the FRP grating made?

The FRP grating is made of fiberglass and resin. The fiberglass enhances the strength of the finished product, while the resin makes it resistant to corrosive substances.

Fiberglass Reinforced Panels Advantages

FPR is a low-cost, easy-to-install system that turns drywall or other surfaces into Superwall:

ㆍStrong scratch-resistant material

ㆍCan be cleaned easily using regular detergents, high-pressure washers, or even steam

ㆍLightweight, flexible panel that is easy to install

ㆍCan be installed with glue or fasteners, or both

ㆍMaximum sanitation protection

ㆍImproved chemical resistance

ㆍInstalls over any many materials using basic and techniques

ㆍHigh impact resistance from shattering and scratches

ㆍSuperior flexibility

ㆍCan save money over other building materials

ㆍHelps prevent the growth of mold and will not rust or corrode

What is the difference between molded grating and pultruded FRP grating?

The molded FRP grating is a mesh composed of horizontal and vertical liquid resin layers and continuous glass fiber rovings. As the name suggests, it is made in a large metal mold.

The multi-directional strength of the molded FRP grating means that the cuts that make room for ducts or complex floor layouts do not require additional reinforcement. Another advantage of molded FRP is that it is standard size, which can be ordered in batches, and stored until needed.

The pultruded FRP grating adopts different manufacturing processes. It uses resin and glass fibers to combine them into a new composite material through a series of steps.

It does not use molds, so there is more flexibility when creating different shapes and sizes. And it usually reduces waste. The pultruded FRP grating has a higher glass-to-resin ratio, which improves its strength and span capability.

Where is the FRP grating used?

FRP gratings are usually found in dangerous or harsh environments, and it may be exposed to elements or dangerous and corrosive chemicals. Here are some examples of using FRP gratings:

In ships and offshore installations: The sturdy and durable characteristics of FRP grating make it an ideal choice for ships and oil rigs or other offshore installations. It can be exposed to wind, rain and extreme temperatures, or it can be submerged in water. It is also very light and relatively easy to transport.

Working with flammable materials: FRP grating does not generate any sparks, so it is generally regarded as a safer alternative to steel or other metals surrounding flammable materials. For example, throwing a metal object on it will not produce sparks, and may cause the atmosphere around it to ignite.

In electrical hazardous environments: FRP gratings are usually used in electrical hazardous environments because it does not conduct electricity. Therefore, in accidents involving electricity, it reduces the risk of electric shock or other injuries.

Chemical plant: FRP grating is non-corrosive. This makes it an ideal material for walkways, platforms and other surfaces in chemical factories where there is a risk of corrosive substances leaking or spilling.

In complex construction sites: the easy-to-transport, store and cut FRP grating makes it a flexible and economical solution for on-site work. The construction company can use standard cutting tools to adapt the FRP grating to the complex and fluid site layout.
